You might not know much about Melbourne, but I want to tell you because it is such a great city. It is on the southern coast of Australia in the Victoria state, and it is a place that sits right on the water. It is backed up by the Outback, and it plays host to some of the best places to visit in Australia. I have a lovely friend there, but even she admits that she does not compare to all that Melbourne has to offer.
The Australian Open
The Australian Open is the first grand slam of the tennis season, and it is the one that Margaret Court won the most. It draws huge crowds every year, and the hardcourt facility that they use is breathtaking. You will absolutely love it when you go down there because the courts are amazing, you get to see the best players in the world and the city comes out for a major party for two weeks while the tournament is going on.
The Arts Community
Melbourne is an artsy community that most people do not know about. You can take the tram into the city, and you will find dozens of shops, artists and musicians all over town. There are concerts going on all the time, and the local university has its own arts department that puts on shows year round. There is a special school spectacular that shows off how much the arts mean to the schools in the area, and you will be amazed at how much music and art there is. You cannot get away from it, and the city will bathe you in artistic splendor for days.
You are right on the ocean, and you are essentially looking over the edge of the world as the city faces Antarctica. The ocean there is very blue, and you will be able to see some great coral reefs just off the coast. You can go down to the beaches that are packed for a lot of the year, or you can go to the historic places that have lighthouses and small fishing villages that you will enjoy.
The city of Melbourne is replete with all the things you could ever need to enjoy a trip, and I love going down there to see what it is all about. Melbourne is one of the most unique cities in the world in its own right.
